2024 PIHL Class A Varsity Penguins Cup Playoffs
Mars Area High School Boys Varsity Hockey Team advanced to the play-in round of the 2024 PIHL Class A Penguins Cup Playoffs on Feb. 27, but was defeated 3-2 by the Moon Area Tigers.
The Fightin Planets ended the regular with an overall record of 15-5 in division play.
Players on this year’s team included senior Ben Olshenske, junior Ben Bowser and sophomore Adam Goul, all of whom were selected to compete in the 2024 PIHL Class A All-Star Gold Game. Rounding out the team are seniors Declan Abbey, Nathan Bossola, Jacob Lestitian, Ethan Lipchin, Ben Matusek, Will Matusek and Luke Olshenske; juniors Colin Stevenson, Gavin Stevenson and Max Zagorski; and, sophomores Xavier Bossola, Sean Crowley, Ethan DaSilva, Carter Gallagher, Alexander Gatto, Cooper Stevens, Jack Tirch, Grant Weaver and Jack Weaver.

The Fightin’ Planets defeated the Neshannock Lancers 5-2 in the PIHL semifinals on March 22; and topped the Butler Golden Tornados 8-1 in the quarterfinals on March 20. The team finished the regular season with an overall record of 15-1-1 in JV Tier 3 Division 1 competition.

Two members of Mars Area High School Boys Varsity Hockey Team were selected to compete in the 2023 Pennsylvania Interscholastic Hockey League (PIHL) Class 2A All-Star Game at 5 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 29, at Robert Morris University Island Sports Center.

Returning to this year’s team are seniors Ian Edinger and Willow Starkey; and juniors Declan Abbey, Nathan Bossola, Jacob Lestitian, Ethan Lipchin, Will Matusek and Ben Olshenske.
