Five Mars Area High School seniors are planning to continue their sports careers at the college level:

Gianna Buzzelli signed a letter of intent to join the Zips Women’s Lacrosse Team at The University of Akron (Ohio), where she plans to major in mechanical engineering and minor in business.

Buzzelli is a four-year member and a current co-captain of Mars Area High School Girls Varsity Lacrosse Team. In 2018, the Lady Planets advanced to the Third Place Consolation Game of the WPIAL Class 2A Girls Varsity Lacrosse Championship, after ending the regular season with an overall record of 10-6 and 8-2 in Section 3-2A play and taking second place in section.

At Mars Area High School, Buzzelli is a member of REACH (Responsible Educated Adolescents Can Help); a former member of Class Council; and she participates in chorus and the musical. She was also a member of the Girls Varsity Golf Team during her sophomore and junior years.

In the community, Buzzelli is a member of Pittsburgh Premier Lacrosse Club and she volunteers at St. Kilian Parish.

Jenna Halenda signed a letter of intent to join the Gators Women’s Swimming & Diving Team at Allegheny College (Meadville, Pa.), where she plans to major in chemistry.

Halenda is a four-year member of Mars Area High School Girls Varsity Swimming & Diving Team. She is also a member of the Pine-Richland Aquatics and Rose E. Schneider Family YMCA swim teams.

At Mars Area High School she is a member of Creative Writing Club, Diversity Club, French National Honor Society, National Honor Society and STEM (Science Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) Club. She also performs with the school’s marching band, concert band and orchestra.

Shane Lisman signed a letter of intent to join the Gators Men’s Soccer Team at Allegheny College (Meadville, Pa.), where he plans to major in business and minor in communications.

Lisman is a four-year member of Mars Area High School Boys Varsity Soccer Team, which, this season, took fourth place in the WPIAL Class 3A Boys Varsity Soccer Championships and remained undefeated in section play, earning the Section 1-3A title. He was named to both the 2018 All-WPIAL and All-Section Boys Soccer Teams.

At Mars Area High School, Lisman is a member of Class Council. In the community, he is a member of SCS United Soccer Club and he volunteers as a referee at Glade Run Church.

Garrett Riddle signed a letter of intent to join the Panthers Men’s Soccer Team at The University of Pittsburgh — Johnstown, where he plans to major in business and minor in health care administration.

Riddle is a four-year member of Mars Area High School Boys Varsity Soccer Team, which, this season, took fourth place in the WPIAL Class 3A Boys Varsity Soccer Championships and remained undefeated in section play, earning the Section 1-3A title.

In the community, he is a member of SCS United Soccer Club.

Claire Valentine signed a letter of intent to join the Hilltoppers Women’s Soccer Team at West Liberty University (W.Va.), where she plans to major in biology — pre-medicine.

Valentine is a four-year member of Mars Area High School Girls Varsity Soccer Team, which advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2018 PIAA Class 3A Girls Soccer Championship; took second place in the 2018 WPIAL Class 3A Girls Soccer Championship; and earned the Section 1-3A title with an undefeated record. She was named to both the 2018 All-WPIAL and All-Section Girls Soccer Teams.

At Mars Area High School, Valentine is a member of National Honor Society, REACH, and Spanish National Honor Society. In the community, she is a member of Northern Steel Soccer Club and she volunteers at UPMC.
