TRACK & FIELD NEWS (updated 05.28.19)

Two members of Mars Area High School’s Boys & Girls Varsity Track & Field Team competed in the 2019 PIAA Class 3A Varsity Track & Field Championships, held May 24-25 at Shippensburg University.

Junior Zachary Leachman earned fourth place with a time of 9:12.17 in the Boys 3,200-Meter Run. Junior Carsyn Hetzler took 22nd place with a distance of 35 feet, 8.75 inches in the Girls Triple Jump.

Hetzler and Leachman advanced to the state championships after placing third and fourth, respectively, in their individual events at the 2019 WPIAL Class 3A Varsity Track & Field Championship on May 16.

WPIAL Class 3A Championship

Several members of Mars Area High School’s Boys & Girls Varsity Track & Field Team competed in the 2019 WPIAL Class 3A Varsity Track & Field Championship, held May 16 at Slippery Rock University.

On the girls team, junior Carsyn Hetzler earned third place with a distance of 36 feet, 3.75 inches in the Triple Jump. Junior Madison Myers earned seventh place (17 feet, 4.25 inches) and junior Carsyn Hetzler received 21st place (15 feet, 1 inch) in the Long Jump.

Sophomore McKenna Bowes took sixth place (11:38.15) in the 3,200-Meter Run. Senior Tai Johnson earned seventh place (1:00.65) in the 400-Meter Dash.

Sophomore Gracie Dunaway received 20th place (12.79) and senior Tai Johnson took 21st place (13.00) in the preliminary round of the 100-Meter Dash. The team of seniors Tai Johnson and Rachel Scherer, sophomore Gracie Dunaway, and freshman Lauren Campion received 16th place (50.81) in the 400-Meter Relay.

On the boys team, junior Zachary Leachman earned fourth place (9:20.57) in the 3,200-Meter Run; and junior Blake Edwards took 11th place (41.74) in the 300-Meter Hurdles. Junior Blake Edwards received 20th place (16.52) in the preliminary round of the 110-Meter Hurdles.

Junior Drew Schlegel received 14th place (20 feet, 6.5 inches) in the Long Jump; and, senior Hunter Boyd received 17th place (42 feet, 2.5 inches) in the Shot Put. Senior Hunter Boyd took 11th place (130 feet, 9 inches) and junior Shiloh Mayer received 15th place (124 feet, 2 inches) in the Discus.

Butler Eagle Track & Field Honor Roll 

Several members of Mars Area High School Boys and Girls Varsity Track & Field Teams were named to the 2019 Butler Eagle Track & Field Honor Roll.

Boys team members include junior Blake Edwards (110-Meter Hurdles, 300-Meter Hurdles); junior Zachary Leachman (1,600 Meter Run, 3,200-Meter Run); junior Drew Schlegel (Long Jump); and senior Hunter Boyd (Discus, Shot Put); the team of senior John Zervos, juniors Clayton Pfeifer and Jathan Snavely, and freshman Anuj Kaul (3,200-Meter Relay); the team of juniors Samuel Bean, Blake Edwards and Zachary Leachman, and freshman Evan Thompson (1,600-Meter Relay). 

Girls team members include senior Tai Johnson (100-Meter Dash; 400-Meter Run); sophomore McKenna Bowes (1,600-Meter Run, 3,200-Meter Run); sophomore Gracie Dunaway (200-Meter Dash); junior Madison Myers (Long Jump, Triple Jump); junior Carsyn Hetzler (Triple Jump); the team of seniors Camille Bromley and Haylee Fredericks and freshmen Sidney Jaeger and Kalin Wilson (3,200-Meter Relay); the team of senior Tai Johnson, sophomores McKenna Bowes and Gracie Dunaway, and freshman Kalin Wilson (1,600-Meter Relay); and, the team of seniors Tai Johnson and Rachel Scherer, sophomore Gracie Dunaway, and freshman Lauren Campion (400-Meter Relay).


WPIAL Class 3A Boys Varsity Team Track Championships

Mars Area High School Boys Varsity Track & Field Team took second place in the quarterfinals of the 2019 WPIAL Class 3A Boys Varsity Team Track Championships, held April 30 at Seneca Valley High School.

The Fightin’ Planets earned 45 points, competing against the Chartiers Valley Colts, New Castle Red Hurricanes and the Seneca Valley Raiders. For more information, visit www.wpial.org14
