Mars Area High School Girls Varsity Soccer Team earned the 2019 PIAA Class 3A Girls Soccer Championship, defeating the Villa Joseph Marie Jems 1-0 in final game of the competition on Nov. 16.
The Lady Planets vanquished the Archbishop Wood Vikings 5-1 in the PIAA semifinals on Nov. 12; routed the West Allegheny Indians 4-0 in the PIAA quarterfinals on Nov. 9; and slayed the Warren Area Dragons 6-1 in the first round of the PIAA playoffs on Nov. 5. The team advanced to the state playoffs after defeating the Plum Mustangs 4-0 to earn the 2019 WPIAL Class 3A Girls Soccer Championship Title on Nov. 2.
The team bested the Belle Vernon Leopards 2-0 in the WPIAL semifinals on Oct. 28; tamed the Thomas Jefferson Jaguars 7-0 in the WPIAL quarterfinals on Oct. 24; and, topped the Trinity Hillers 7-0 in the first round of the WPIAL playoffs on Oct. 21. The Planets ended the 2019 regular season with an overall record of 14-0-1 and went undefeated (14-0) in section play, earning the Section 1-3A title.
Players on this year’s team included seniors Ashley Edwards, Taylor Hamlett, Grace Ingram, Kiara Khemani, Anna Kurpakus and Olivia Williams; juniors Ellie Coffield, Gracie Dunaway, Eleanor Howell, Alexandra King, Samantha King, Courtney Lisman, Kara Rocco, Erin Rodgers and Caroline Wroblewski; sophomores Kristin Bayuk, Megan Boddy, Sydney Carr, Isabella Cinalli, Alyson Cooper, Leana Cuzzocrea, Jordan Esswein, Londynn Gonzalez and Jenna Jedry; and freshmen Ava Balazentis, Piper Coffield, Reese Dunaway, Piper Empey, Julia Gagnon, Eden Gerlach, Brooke Hamlett, Gwen Howell, Ava Lewis, Eva Ranalli, Peyton Shick and Olivia Wilson.
