Several members of Mars Area High School Varsity Football Team were selected for the Western Pennsylvania Big 5/6 Athletic Conference Section 3-5A Football All-Conference Teams.

Senior Michael Carmody (tackle), senior Blake Edwards (kicker), junior Theodore Ruffner (running back) and senior Mitchell Wright (tight end) were named to the First Team Offense.

Senior Dalton Becker (guard) and senior Josh Grell (wide receiver) were selected for the Second Team Offense; and junior Drew Schlegel (defensive back) and senior Niccolas Spotti (defensive back) for the Second Team Defense.

Honorable Mentions went to junior Chase Nesselroad (center) for Offensive; and to senior Giovanni Cuzzocrea (defensive end), senior Hayden Manning (defensive tackle), junior Ben Chizmar (inside linebacker), and sophomore Zach Schlegel (defensive back) for Defense.

This season, the Fightin’ Planets advanced to the first round of the 2019 WPIAL Class 5A Boys Football Championship. The team ended the 2019 regular season with an overall record of 6-4 and 4-3 in Section 3-5A of the Northern Conference.

2019 WPIAL Class 5A Boys Football Championship

Mars Area High School Boys Varsity Football Team advanced to the first round of the 2019 WPIAL Class 5A Boys Football Championship on Nov. 1, but was defeated 47-6 by the Peters Township Mighty Indians.

The Fightin’ Planets ended the 2019 regular season with an overall record of 6-4 and 4-3 in Section 3-5A of the Northern Conference. This season, junior Theodore Ruffner led the team in scoring with 25 touchdowns and sophomore Quinn Fuller, led the team in passing with 489 yards.

Junior Theodore Ruffner led in rushing (1,845 yards), followed by sophomore Niccolas Spotti (385 yards). Sophomore Niccolas Spotti and senior Mitchell Wright (138 yards) led the team in receiving with 162 and 138 yards, respectively.

Rounding out this year’s team were seniors Ryan Barber, Dalton Becker, Michael Carmody, Giovanni Cuzzocrea, Declan DeLong, Joe DeLuca, Blake Edwards, Joshua Grell, Jared Kozora, Hayden Manning, Mason O’Bryon, Jonathan Quinn, Sam Santoro, Drew Schlegel and Gerard Zottola; juniors Lance Bartley, Ben Chizmar, Christian Kay, Jordan Moser, Chase Nesselroad, Colin Vandenberghe, Anthony Vargo and Domenic Zottola; sophomores Jake Caringola, Remy Crofutt, Anthony Dentel, Matthew Detisch, Christopher Dvorak, Hunter Hart, Timothy Humes, Martin Mowad, Jacob Ottenweller, Zachary Schlegel, Joey Tepke, Evan Thompson and Eli Wright; and freshmen Rafael Bartley, Colt Crofutt, Jack Hull, Alex Jablunovsky, Hayden Mayer, Ian Messina, Luka Moran, Noah Nesselroad, Carlos Orr, Ethan Primrose, Logan Santa and Leo Saver.
