District Bids Farewell to Retiring Staff Member

Ted GrossTed Gross, a social studies teacher at Mars Area High School, is retiring after 31 years at Mars Area School District.

Gross, who holds a bachelor’s degree in secondary education (social studies) from Clarion State College, joined the District in 1990 as a social studies and in-school suspension teacher at Mars Area High School and Mars Area Middle School. Throughout his teaching career, he has taught American Cultures, College within the High School (CHS) Psychology, Pennsylvania History, Psychology, Sociology, War & Peace, World Cultures, and World Geography.

During his time at Mars Area, he has served as a head coach for junior high football; an assistant coach for girls varsity basketball, varsity football, varsity softball and seventh/eighth grade football; a weight room supervisor; and a co-sponsor of the senior, junior, sophomore and freshman classes. In addition, he has served as a co-athletics ticket manager, a social studies curriculum leader; Mars Area Education Association (MAEA) president and vice president; and as Pennsylvania State Education Association (PSEA) Butler County president.

Prior to joining the District, Gross served as an in-school suspension teacher at Butler Area Alternate High School and as a JROTC substitute instructor at Butler Area Junior/Senior High School.

A distinguished graduate of U.S. Army Armor School (Fort Knox, Ky.), Gross served as an armored officer in West Germany. He served in the Cadre Regimental Reconnaissance School with the Camp Lee 2nd Squadron 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment (Wollbach, Germany) and as scout platoon leader with the Echo Troop 2nd Squadron 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment (Bad Kissingen, Germany).

He received three U.S. Army achievement medals; participated in the U.S. Army ROTC Advanced Camp; and attended the U.S. Army Airborne School U.S. Army Nuclear, Biological & Chemical School, and U.S. Army Scout Commander Certification School.

In his retirement, Gross plans to spend time with his first grandchild, who is expected in June.
