BASKETBALL NEWS (updated 04.09.21)

Several members of Mars Area High School Boys and Girls Varsity Basketball Teams were named to the 2020-2021 Butler Eagle Honor Roll.

Junior Ava Black (forward) was named to Tier I; sophomore Olivia Donnelly (guard/forward) to Tier III, and Kaitlyn Pelaia (guard/forward) was selected as an honorable mention on the Girls Basketball Honor Roll.

Junior Zach Schlegel (guard) was selected for Tier I, senior Mihali Sfanos (guard) for Tier II, and sophomore Tasso Sfanos (guard) for Tier III of the Boys Basketball Honor Roll.

WPIAL Class 5A Boys Basketball Championship

Mars Area High School Boys Varsity Basketball Team advanced to the semifinals of the 2020-2021 WPIAL Class 5A Boys Basketball Championship on March 10, but were defeated 63-55 by the Chartiers Valley Colts.

The Fightin’ Planets topped the Trinity Hillers 67-55 in the WPIAL quarterfinals on March 6; and parried the Franklin Regional Panthers 54-45 in the first round of the WPIAL playoffs on March 3. The team ended the 2020-2021 regular season with an overall record of 13-2 and 9-2 in Section 4-5A.

Players on this year’s team included seniors Nathaniel Roush, Eric Schaffner, Mihali Sfanos and Anthony Vargo; juniors Austin Cote, Bryce Cunningham, Christopher Dvorak, Jonah Kozora and Zach Schlegel; sophomores Andrew Cashdollar, Peter Craska, Devon Koch, Christian Marks, Quinn Navetta, Evan Peaco, Zach Orosz, Joey Rocco, Tasso Sfanos, Jake Thompson and Armando Vargo; and freshman Peter Gonzales.

WPIAL Class 5A Girls Basketball Championship

Mars Area High School Girls Varsity Basketball Team advanced to the first round of the 2020-2021 WPIAL Class 5A Girls Basketball Championship on March 4, but was defeated 83-36 by the Trinity Hillers.

The Lady Planets thrashed the Gateway Gators 47-33 in the preliminary round of the WPIAL playoffs on March 1. The team ended the 2020-2021 regular season with an overall record of 7-9 and 6-6 in Section 2-5A.

Players on this year’s team included seniors Madeleine Horvath, Alek Johnson and Carly Kern; juniors Ava Black, Kylee Fredericks, Kaitlyn Pelaia, Allison Rice and Jessica Winter; sophomores Lauren Atwell, Avery Bennett, Olivia Donnelly, Clare Guinee, Alexa McDole and Megan Yanief; and freshmen Ava Day, Katherine Detisch, Abigail Lape, Kaitlyn Lawless, Emma McCosby, Lindsay Morello and Riley Strong
