Mars Area High School Boys Varsity Lacrosse Team advanced to the final game of the 2021 PIAA Class 2A Boys Varsity Lacrosse Championships on June 12, but were defeated 14-5 by the Allentown Central Catholic Vikings.
The Fightin’ Planets grounded the Bishop Shanahan Eagles in the PIAA semifinals on June 8, becoming the first team from Western Pennsylvania to advance to the PIAA Championship Final. The team topped the Trinity Hillers 14-9 in the PIAA quarterfinals on June 5; and, thwarted the Hershey Trojans 12-0 in the first round of the PIAA playoffs on June 1.
The team broke the Chartiers Valley Colts 18-4 in the final game of the 2021 WPIAL Class 2A Boys Varsity Lacrosse Championship on May 27, earning the team’s fifth consecutive WPIAL title. The Planets routed the South Fayette Lions 20-6 in the WPIAL semifinals on May 24; and, tamed the Franklin Regional Panthers 29-3 in the WPIAL quarterfinals on May 19.
The Planets ended the regular season with an overall record of 16-0 and 8-0 in section play, earning the 2021 Section 2-2A title.
Player on this year’s team included seniors Caleb Raydo and Jacob Wooldridge, who have committed to play for Lincoln Memorial University (Tenn.) and the University of Detroit Mercy (Mich.), respectively; as well as junior Austin Cote to Loyola University Maryland and junior Quinn Fuller to Jacksonville University (Fla.).
Rounding out the team were seniors Ben Chizmar, Nicholas Crowley, Jacob Gareis, Zach Gerthoffer, Noah Grau, Christian Kay, Jared Kolarcik-Schmitt, Luke Whittaker, Jeffrey Shay and Grant Thompson; juniors Luke Amell, Jacob Caringola, Tucker Kush, Aidan Moffa, Wes Scurci and Josh Seipp; sophomores Jack Dunham, Ian Edinger, Evan Frye, Jonathan Grieco, Kyle McEwen and Leo Saver; and freshmen Domenic Caldwell and Jack McKenzie.

PIAA Class 2A Girls Varsity Lacrosse Championships
Mars Area High School Girls Varsity Lacrosse Team advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2021 PIAA Class 2A Girls Varsity Lacrosse Championships on June 5, but were defeated 21-8 by the Strath Haven Panthers.
The Lady Planets grounded the Conneaut Area Eagles 15-7 in the first round of PIAA playoffs on June 1. The team defeated the Blackhawk Cougars 10-3 in the final game of the 2021 WPIAL Class 2A Girls Varsity Lacrosse Championship on May 26, winning the WPIAL title and earning a spot in the state playoffs.
The team trounced the Hampton Talbots 16-13 in the WPIAL semifinals on May 24; and beat the Aquinas Academy Crusaders 19-5 in the WPIAL quarterfinals on May 20. The Planets ended the regular season with an overall record of 16-0 and 8-0 in section play, earning the 2021 Section 2-2A title.
Players on this year’s team include senior Carly Kern (captain), who has committed to play for Baldwin-Wallace University; senior Alaina Metal (captain), who has signed with Muskingham University; and junior Kellen Fletcher (captain), who was selected to represent Western Pennsylvania at the 2021 Women’s National Lacrosse Tournament and has committed to play for The University of Akron.
Other team members include seniors Lexus Haskins, Elizabeth Kaplan, Cailey Killian and Kaitlyn Krause; juniors Mackenzie Newman, Kelsie Patterson, Lindsey Rogers, Ava Santoro, Ella Seebacher, Lydia Toparli and Grace Wu; sophomores Emma Grell, Jessica McNulty, Ainsley McGee, Amber O’Neil, Charlotte Stamper and Sarah Teamann; and, freshmen Sophia Bucknum, Mya Cote, Zoey Krock and McKenna Merritt.
