Mars Area graduates Elizabeth Long and Mckenna Bowes were named valedictorian and salutatorian of the Class of 2021, respectively.
Elizabeth Long is a recipient of the U.S. Marine Corps Scholastic Excellence Award and a Society of Women Engineers — Pittsburgh Section Certificate of Merit. Long was also named a 2020-2021 Rich-Mar Rotary Student of the Month; and, during the 2019-2020 School Year, she earned an academic excellence award in The Challenge Program.
At Mars Area High School, Long was a four-year member of Mars Area High School Girls Varsity Volleyball Team, which advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2020 WPIAL Class 3A Girls Volleyball Championship; and, she was a member of the Girls Varsity Track & Field Team. She was also a member of Enrichment Club, National Honor Society, Spanish National Honor Society and Student Council.
As a member of Enrichment Club, Long worked with her fellow students to secure a Mars Planet Foundation grant to fund the design and constriction of a “Mars Escape Room” activity, which was offered at Mars Area Public Library during the 2019 Mars New Year celebration in Downtown Mars.
Long plans to attend Pennsylvania State University.
Mckenna Bowes is a recipient of a University of Pittsburgh/Manerino Family Scholarship; and, during the 2019-2020 School Year, she earned a STEM award in The Challenge Program.
At Mars Area High School, Bowes was a member of German National Honor Society, Interact Club, Key Club, National Honor Society, and the Water Protection Program.
As a member of the Girls Varsity Cross Country Team, she competed in the 2017 PIAA Class 3A Championship and in both the 2017 and 2018 WPIAL Class 3A Championships; and, as a member of the Girls Varsity Track & Field Team, she competed in the 2018 and 2019 WPIAL Class 3A Championships.
Bowes plans to attend the University of Pittsburgh.
