Graduate to Play for San Francisco Giants

Mars Area High School graduate Will Bednar (Class of 2019) was selected 14th overall in the first round of the Major League Baseball (MLB) draft by the San Francisco Giants.

Bednar, a pitcher for the Mississippi State University Men’s Baseball Team, was named MVP of the 2021 NCAA Division 1 Men’s College Baseball World Series after allowing zero hits in six innings and helping to lead the Bulldogs to a 9-0 victory over the Vanderbilt University Commodores and the team’s first national title. He finished the season at 9-1 with a 3.12 ERA, 139 strikeouts and 26 walks in 92.5 innings.

At Mars Area High School, Bednar was a pitcher on Mars Area High School Boys Varsity Baseball Team, which earned second place in the 2018 WPIAL Class 5A Championship and advanced to the PIAA quarterfinals. In 2018, he was named the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette High School Baseball Class 5A Player of the Year.
