Mars Area High School Boys Varsity Golf Team set a new school record with a combined low score of 179 (-1) at the Fightin’ Planets match against the Pine-Richland Rams on Sept. 7 at Rittswood Golf Course.
Topping the leaderboard were seniors Blake Bertolo and Ryan Steigerwald, both earning a score of 34; sophomore Will Campbell (35); sophomore James Kinghorn (37); and Matt Mueller (39). Honorable mentions went to sophomores Colin Stevenson (39) and Cory Killian (40) and freshman Lukas Singh (41).

This season, the Fightin’ Planets advanced to the final round of the 2021 WPIAL Class 3A Boys Golf Team Championships, after taking second place in the WPIAL Team Semifinals. Participating golfers included seniors Raghav Kalbhor, Lucas Kuremsky and Wes Scurci; juniors Blake Bertolo and Ryan Steigerwald; and freshman Will Campbell.
In individual competition, Bertolo tied for 26th place in the 2021 PIAA Class 3A Boys Varsity Golf Championship. He qualified for the state finals after tying for fourth place in the 2021 WPIAL Class 3A Boys Varsity Golf Individual Championship.
Bertolo tied for 16th place and Steigerwald took 62nd place in the 2021 WPIAL Class 3A Boys Varsity Golf Individual Semifinals. Bertolo earned third place and Steigerwald tied for sixth place in the 2021 Section 3-3A WPIAL Individual Qualifier, earning a spot in the WPIAL Individual Semifinals.

The Fightin’ Planets ended the season with an overall record of 13-3 and 9-3 in Section 3-3A, tying for the section title.

JV Boys Golf Team Ends Season Undefeated
Mars Area High School Boys JV Golf Team ended the 2021 season undefeated with an overall record of 13-0.
Team members are Colin Stevenson, Charlie Bickel, Max Solich, Jonah Kozora, James Kinghorn, Cory Killian, Ryan Mitchell and Max Prazer.
2021 WPIAL Class 3A Semifinals
Two members of the Mars Area High School Boys Varsity Golf Team competed in the 2021 WPIAL Class 3A Semifinals, held Sept. 27 at Willowbrook Country Club.
Junior Blake Bertolo earned 16th place with a score of 79 and will advance to the 2021 WPIAL Class 3A Boys Varsity Championship on Tuesday, Oct. 5. Junior Ryan Steigerwald took 62nd place (89) in the semifinal event.
2021 Section 1-3A WPIAL Individual Qualifier
Several members of Mars Area High School Girls Varsity Golf Team competed in the 2021 Section 1-3A WPIAL Individual Qualifier, held Sept. 23 at Suncrest Golf Course.
Junior Sophie Maestra earned a score of 92 on the Par 72 course; senior Danielle Sticinski (106); junior Emily Cronin (106); and senior Allison Rice (108).
2021 Section 3-3A WPIAL Individual Qualifier
Several members of Mars Area High School Boys Varsity Golf Team competed in the 2021 Section 3-3A WPIAL Individual Qualifier, held Sept. 21 at Shannopin Country Club.
Junior Blake Bertolo earned third place with a score of 77 and junior Ryan Steigerwald tied for sixth place (80). Both will advance to the 2021 WPIAL Class 3A Semifinals on Monday, Sept. 27, at Willowbrook Country Club.
Other competitors in the section qualifier included freshman Will Campbell and senior Wes Scurci, both of whom tied for 15th place (84); senior Lucas Kuremsky, who took 23rd place (87); and, senior Raghav Kalbhor, who received 24th place (88).
2021 MAC Boys Varsity Golf Tournament
The team, which competed against players from 23 other high school, earned an overall score of 232. Junior Blake Bertolo tied for second place overall with a score of 74; and junior Ryan Steigerwald and freshman William Campbell tied for 10th place overall, each with a score of 79.
