MARCHING BAND NEWS (updated 10.25.21)

Members of Mars Area High School Marching Band pause for a picture with the band’s first place PIMBA Class 2A award.Mars Area High School Marching Band won the Class 2A Championship Title at the 2021 PIMBA (Pennsylvania Interscholastic Marching Band Association) Championships, held Oct. 23, at Gateway High School.

The Fightin’ Planets, who competed against bands from Baldwin, Deer Lakes, Fox Chapel, Gateway, Penn Hills, Trinity and Yough high schools, earned a overall score of 87.150. The band also earned high honors for music performance as well as music and visual effect. 

This year’s band show, themed “Missing U,” features the music of Pink Floyd, including the songs, “Shine On You Crazy Diamond,” “Wish You Were Here” and “Welcome to the Machine.”

Deer Lakes Area Marching Band Festival

The Fightin’ Planets, who competed against bands from Gateway, Penn Hills and Yough high schools, earned a combined score of 88.346 in Class 2A competition, receiving top honors for music and visual performance as well as music and visual effect.

This year’s band show, themed “Missing U,” features the music of Pink Floyd, including the songs, “Shine On You Crazy Diamond,” “Wish You Were Here” and “Welcome to the Machine.”

The band will next compete at the PIMBA (Pennsylvania Interscholastic Marching Band Association) Championships at 8:45 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 23, at Gateway High School (Monroeville, Pa.). For more information, visit www.pimba.org.

Moon Area Marching Band Festival

The Fightin’ Planets, who competed against bands from Baldwin, Fox Chapel, Gateway and Trinity high schools, earned a combined score of 86.375 in Class 2A competition, earning top honors for music and visual performance as well as music and visual effect.

This year’s band show, themed “Missing U,” features the music of Pink Floyd, including the songs, “Shine On You Crazy Diamond,” “Wish You Were Here” and “Welcome to the Machine.”

The band will next compete at the PIMBA Deer Lakes Marching Band Festival at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 16, at Deer Lakes High School (Cheswick, Pa.). For more information, visit www.pimba.org.

2021 Bands of America Central Ohio Regional Championship

Mars Area High School Marching Band earned ninth place at the 2021 Bands of America Central Ohio Regional Championship, held Sept. 25 at Fortress Obetz (Ohio).

The band, which competed against groups from Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia, earned an overall score of 68.050 and was judged on music and visual performance as well as general effect. The Planets qualified for the final round of the competition after achieving an overall score of 67.200 in the preliminaries. 

“The kids were thrilled to be back competing on a national stage, and they definitely turned some heads,” says Dave Soose, director, noting that the last time that the band made the final round at a Bands of America regional competition was in 2010.

Mars Area High School Marching Band’s 2021-2022 Halftime Show features the music of Pink Floyd. The show, themed “Missing U,” will feature the songs “Shine On You Crazy Diamond,” “Wish You Were Here” and “Welcome to the Machine.
