Several members of Mars Area High School Boys and Girls Varsity Soccer Teams are listed among the best players in the state and region.
On the girls team, junior Gwen Howell was named to the 2021 United Soccer Coaches (USC) Female All-America (Region II East) Team. Howell and senior Alyson Cooper were selected for the 2021All-State Team.
Cooper, Howell, senior Leana Cuzzocrea and junior Piper Coffield were selected for the All-WPIAL team. Coffield, Cooper, Cuzzocrea, Howell, juniors Reese Dunaway and Ava Lewis, and sophomore Ainsley Ray were named to the All-Section Team.
This season, the Lady Planets earned their third consecutive PIAA and WPIAL title. The team ended the 2021 regular season undefeated with an overall record of 12-0-1 and went undefeated (12-0) in section play, earning the Section 4-3A title.
On the boy team, seniors Mason Meyer and Gabriel Singh were named to the 2021 All-WPIAL Team. Meyer, Singh and senior Zaccheri Campagna were selected for the 2021All-Section Team.
The Fightin’ Planets advanced to the 2021 WPIAL Quarterfinals. The team ended the regular season with an overall record of 12-4-2 and 10-4 in Section 1-3A.

2021 PIAA Class 3A Girls Soccer Championship
Mars Area High School Girls Varsity Soccer Team defeated the Radnor Red Raiders 2-1 in double overtime in the final game of the 2021 PIAA Class 3A Girls Soccer Championship on Nov. 20 to earn the Lady Planets’ third consecutive PIAA Championship Title.
The Planets broke the Plum Mustangs 1-0 in the PIAA Semifinals on Nov. 16; vanquished the Montour Spartans 1-0 in the PIAA Quarterfinals on Nov. 13, and outplayed the Red Land Patriots 2-0 in the first round of the PIAA Playoffs on Nov. 9.
The team advanced to the state playoffs after defeating the Plum Mustangs 2-0 in the final game of the 2021 WPIAL Class 3A Girls Soccer Championship on Nov. 6 and earning its third consecutive WPIAL Title. The Planets conquered the Montour Spartans 1-0 in the WPIAL semifinals on Nov. 2; grounded the Oakland Catholic Eagles 6-0 in the quarterfinals on Oct. 28; and stopped the Penn Hills Indians 7-0 in the first round on Oct. 25.
The Lady Planets ended the 2021 regular season undefeated with an overall record of 12-0-1 and went undefeated (12-0) in section play, earning the Section 4-3A title. In the last three seasons, the team has remained undefeated and amassed an overall record of 61-0-2.
This year’s team captains are seniors Alyson Cooper and Leana Cuzzocrea and juniors Piper Coffield and Gwen Howell, all of whom were selected for the 2021 All-WPIAL (3A) Team. The Fightin’ Planets tamed the Belle Vernon Area Leopards 4-0 in the first round of the WPIAL Playoffs on Oct. 23. The team ended the 2021 regular season with an overall record of 12-4-2 and 10-4 in Section 1-3A.
