Mars Area High School Girls Varsity Soccer Team celebrates after winning the team’s third consecutive PIAA Class 3A Championship Title.Mars Area High School Girls Varsity Soccer Team defeated the Radnor Red Raiders 2-1 in double overtime in the final game of the 2021 PIAA Class 3A Girls Soccer Championship on Nov. 20 to earn the Lady Planets’ third consecutive PIAA Championship Title.

The Planets broke the Plum Mustangs 1-0 in the PIAA Semifinals on Nov. 16; vanquished the Montour Spartans 1-0 in the PIAA Quarterfinals on Nov. 13, and outplayed the Red Land Patriots 2-0 in the first round of the PIAA Playoffs on Nov. 9.

The team advanced to the state playoffs after defeating the Plum Mustangs 2-0 in the final game of the 2021 WPIAL Class 3A Girls Soccer Championship on Nov. 6 and earning its third consecutive WPIAL Title. The Planets conquered the Montour Spartans 1-0 in the WPIAL semifinals on Nov. 2; grounded the Oakland Catholic Eagles 6-0 in the quarterfinals on Oct. 28; and stopped the Penn Hills Indians 7-0 in the first round on Oct. 25.

The Lady Planets ended the 2021 regular season undefeated with an overall record of 12-0-1 and went undefeated (12-0) in section play, earning the Section 4-3A title. In the last three seasons, the team has remained undefeated and amassed an overall record of 61-0-2.

This year’s team captains are seniors Alyson Cooper and Leana Cuzzocrea and juniors Piper Coffield and Gwen Howell, all of whom were selected for the 2021 All-WPIAL (3A) Team. Other team members include seniors Megan Boddy and Jordan Esswein; juniors Reese Dunaway, Piper Empey, Julia Gagnon, Brooke Hamlett, Ava Lewis and Eva Ranali, Olivia Wilson and Madeline Wolf; sophomores Kayleigh Clark, Addison Girdwood, Lillian Goodworth, Katherine McEnroe, Brooke Nihoff, Rosalina Pellegrino, Ainsley Ray and Lillian Wolf; and, freshmen Julia Lishia, Natasha Narasimhan, Ella Pierce, Brynn Ramsey, Meredith Ashbaugh, Adeline Rocco, Jenna Caringola, Sadie Stewart, Morgan Duker, Alexa Werner, Breanna Goerl, Meagan Williams and Madisyn Hickinbottom.

2021 WPIAL Class 3A Girls Soccer Championship

Mars Area High School Girls Varsity Soccer Team became the first girls soccer team in WPIAL history to earn its third consecutive WPIAL Title, with the Lady Planets 2-1 defeat of the Plum Mustangs in the final game of the 2021 WPIAL Class 3A Girls Soccer Championship on Nov. 6.

2021 WPIAL Class 3A Boys Soccer Championship

Mars Area High School Boys Varsity Soccer Team advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2021 WPIAL Class 3A Boys Soccer Championship on Oct. 27, but was defeated 6-0 by the West Allegheny Indians

The Fightin’ Planets tamed the Belle Vernon Area Leopards 4-0 in the first round of the WPIAL Playoffs on Oct. 23. The team ended the 2021 regular season with an overall record of 12-4-2 and 10-4 in Section 1-3A.

Players on this year’s team included seniors include Derek Blake, Brayden Boatwright, Zaccheri Campagna, Matt Funk, Matthew Hannan, Mason Meyer, Devin Schupp, Gabriel Singh, Mitchell Valentine and Eli Wright; juniors Sacha Bencun, Harlan Burtner, Cade Coldiron, Domenico D’Angelo, Breiden Eagon, Caden Empey, Griffen Frazier, Miles Frazier, Kai Gratton, Drew Piatek and Sam Stewart; sophomores Jackson Fox, Kaden Gratton, James Jayamohan, Liam Quinn, Colton Riska, Landon Rocke, Aiden Savona, Jack Scanlon and Ryan Schnitgen; and freshmen Zachary Angoff, Nicholas Butler, Luca Duerring, Luke Hagen, Jaxen Kosiorek, Camden Osterman and William Wilson.
