A team of Mars Area High School technology education students took second place overall in the sixth annual Shaler Area STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics) Competition, held March 4 at Shaler Area High School.
In addition the team of seniors Joseph Vivirito and Maxwell Weaver, juniors Leo Saver, Samuel Schultz and Ethan Stewart; and sophomore Isaac Thoman, earned first place and third place in the individual competitions. The students competed against 33 teams from other area high schools.
As part the competition, teams were challenged to design, build, and test a “Lawn Dart” Launcher, which was judged on structural stability, flight path consistency and target accuracy. Team members also completed several problem-solving challenges based on the competition’s “The 80s” theme.
