Seven Mars Area High School seniors signed letters of intent to continue their sports careers at the college level:
Ava Black signed a letter of intent to join the Tartans Women’s Basketball Team at Carnegie Mellon University (Pittsburgh, Pa.). She has yet to declare a major.
Black is a four-year member of Mars Area High School Girls Varsity Basketball Team, which advanced to the first round of the 2021-2022 WPIAL Class 5A Girls Varsity Basketball Championship. She was named to the 2021-2022 All-Section (2-5A) First Team and the 2019-2020 All-Section Second Team as well as to the 2020-2021 and 2019-2020 Butler Eagle Girls Basketball Honor Roll.
At Mars Area High School, Black is also a four-year member of the Girls Varsity Volleyball Team and a member of Enrichment Club, German National Honor Society, National Honor Society and Science National Honor Society. In the community she volunteers for youth basketball and at Butler Memorial Hospital.
Alyson Cooper signed a letter of intent to join the Lakers Women’s Soccer Team at Mercyhurst University (Erie, Pa.), where she plans to major in biochemistry.
Cooper is a four-year member of three-year undefeated Mars Area High School Girls Varsity Soccer Team, which earned its third consecutive PIAA and WPIAL Class 3A Girls Varsity Soccer Championship Titles in 2021. She was named to the 2021All-State, All-WPIAL and All-Section (4-3A) teams as well as to the 2020 All-Section (4-3A) Team.
At Mars Area High School, Cooper is a member of Key Club, National Honor Society, Science National Honor Society, and Spanish Club. In the community, she volunteers with youth soccer camps.
Leana Cuzzocrea signed a letter of intent to join the Bald Eagles Women’s Soccer Team at Lock Haven University (Lock Haven, Pa.), where she plans to major in biology/pre-medicine.
Cuzzocrea is a four-year member of three-year undefeated Mars Area High School Girls Varsity Soccer Team, which earned its third consecutive PIAA and WPIAL Class 3A Girls Varsity Soccer Championship titles in 2021. She was named to the All-WPIAL and All-Section (4-3A) teams in both 2020 and 2021.
At Mars Area High School, Cuzzocrea serves as secretary for Class Council; is a co-founder of the Coloring Expressions Club; and is a member of National Honor Society, Science National Honor Society and Spanish Club. In the community she volunteers with youth football and soccer camps.
Matt Mroz signed a letter of intent to join the Bearcats Men’s Baseball Team at St. Vincent College (Latrobe, Pa.), where he plans to major in business.
Mroz is a four-year member of Mars Area High School Varsity Baseball Team, which advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2021 WPIAL Class 5A Boys Varsity Baseball Championship.
At Mars Area High School, Mroz is a member of Spanish Club. In the community, he volunteers at Butler County Humane Society.
Jacob Ottenweller signed a letter of intent to join the Men’s Track & Field Team at Slippery Rock University (Slippery Rock, Pa.), where he plans to major in sports management.
Ottenweller, a four-year member of Mars Area High School Boys Varsity Track & Field Team, competed in the Shot Put event at the 2021 WPIAL Class 3A Track & Field Championships. At the at the 2022 Butler County Classic, Ottenweller earned fourth place in the Discus Throw; tied for fifth place in the Shot Put; and took ninth place in the Javelin Throw.
At Mars Area High School, Ottenweller is also a four-year member of the Varsity Football Team and a two-year member of Spanish Club. In the community, he serves as an Eagle Scout.
Trey Wagner signed a letter of intent to join the Wolverines Men’s Baseball Team at Grove City College (Grove City, Pa.), where he plans to major in education.
Wagner is a four-year member of Mars Area High School Varsity Baseball Team, which advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2021 WPIAL Class 5A Boys Varsity Baseball Championship. In 2021, he was selected for the All-Section Second Team.
At Mars Area High School, Wagner is a member of Spanish Club. In the community, has volunteered at St. Barnabas Health System, with youth baseball camps and activities at Adams Area Fire District.
Grace Wu signed a letter of intent to join the Mountaineers Women’s Cross Country and Track & Field team at West Virginia University (Morgantown, W.Va.), where she plans to major in psychology/criminology.
Wu is a two-year member of Mars Area High School Girls Varsity Cross Country Team. In 2021, she competed in the WPIAL Varsity Cross Country Championships and was named to the All-Butler County Cross Country Team.
In her first year as a member of Mars Area High School Varsity Track & Field Team, she placed third in the 1,600-Meter Run and helped lead the 4x400-Meter and 4x800-Meter relay teams to second place finishes at the 2022 Butler County Classic.
At Mars Area High School, Wu is vice president of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) and is a member of Class Council and Student Council. In the community, she works at Jimmy Wan’s Restaurant.
