Members of Pine-Richland/Mars Area U.S. Air Force JROTC installed the annual “9/11: Never Forget Project” flag memorial at Richland Elementary School (Gibsonia) this school year.
While in past years the memorial has been installed along Route 228 in front of Mars Area High School, the project was moved this year because of road construction, says Capt. Joshua L. Rager, JROTC instructor. “We felt it was an opportunity to share the flag display at another location this year.”
The flag memorial, which includes 2,977 American flags (one for each person who died in the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks), will remain on display through Thursday, Sept. 11.
The memorial, part of the Young America’s Foundation “9/11: Never Forget Project,” was initiated in 2011 by Mars Area graduate Bryan Thomas (Class of 2012) and was installed by student and staff volunteers, until the project was taken over by the JROTC in 2019.
