At a special Pep Rally on Feb. 3, Mars Area High School recognized David Bednar, Pittsburgh Pirate and Mars Area graduate (Class of 2013), by retiring his high school varsity baseball number (24).
On hand for the event was Don Kelly, Pittsburgh Pirates bench coach, who discussed Bednar’s career and the role that he plays as a member of the Pittsburgh Pirates. The school then unveiled Bednar’s framed high school and Pirates jerseys, which will be displayed at the school.
“Enjoy every moment. Cherish every freindship and relationship that you have,” said Bednar, reflecting on his time as a student at the school. “Mars is such a special place. Anything is possible.”
At the pep rally, the school also recognized the members of its winter sports teams. And, the school’s Varsity Club will conclude its Free Throw Contest fundraiser with a teacher versus student competition.
Sophomore Vita Vargo topped Carrie Hetzel, business education teacher, and Gabrielle Hock, English teacher, to win the girls competition. Mark Murphy, business education teacher, bested senior Andrew Cashdollar and Ethan Myler, business education teacher, in the boys event.
