Members of the Mars Area High School Unified Bocce TeamThe school’s Unified Bocce Team, “Mission Imbocce Ball,” is competing in the Three Rivers Region — Butler Division against teams from Butler, Knoch, Moniteau, Seneca Valley and North Catholic/St. Anthony. The team practices twice a week, working on various skills and new strategies to improve their game.

Team members include senior Adam McElhinny, juniors Hal Callithen and Anthony Graham, and freshman Courtney Stewart; and team partners are  sophomore Grace Wilson, freshmen Jackson Kotula and Austin Mackalica.

“Our season started off with two consecutive losses at home. But the team is resilient, winning their first match against Knoch in a Golden Frame playoff on Jan. 26,” says Earlene Allshouse, coach. “(The) team has gained a great deal of experience in this season, with the hopes of not only competing next year, but advancing to regionals.”

The Interscholastic Unified Bocce Season continues from December through February. Each match consists of two 30-minute games.

Special Olympics Unified Sports provide opportunities for physical activity, social interaction, and the demonstration of competence to individuals with intellectual disabilities, their families and the community. Athletes learn important developmental and life skills and participation translates well beyond the sports to help them live more independent and rewarding lives.
