AP Biology Students Join in DNA Fingerprinting Lab

Advanced Placement (AP) Biology students at Mars Area High School joined in a lesson on DNA Fingerprinting as part of a Molecular Biology Workshop, held Jan. 31 at the University of Pittsburgh.

The workshop, conducted by University of Pittsburgh Department of Biological Sciences outreach coordinators Jessica Robertson and Echo Cane, offered hands-on experience in real-life crime investigation techniques. Students isolated DNA from their own cheek cells; amplified the DNA through PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction); and used Gel Electrophoresis to analyze and compare their DNA fingerprints.

In class at Mars Area High School, AP Biology students learn about basic DNA structure and functions as well as how DNA techniques can improve daily life. The workshop offered a unique opportunity for students to study their own DNA in a real college laboratory, under the guidance of an experienced college professor.
