AP English Project Focuses on Current Events

Mars Area High School students Sadie Stewart, Kennedy Kolson, Zach Ruffner, Liam Quinn and Kaitlyn Lawless were selected for their submissions in their AP English Language & Composition’s Current Events One-Pager project.Mars Area High School students in Rebecca Hoffmann’s AP English Language & Composition classes are researching current events as part of a project meant to cultivate intellectually responsible civic engagement.

Using credible online news outlets, the students researched 10 recent events in categories, such as U.S. Politics and Elections, World News, The Environment, Health and Wellness, Sports, Arts and Entertainment, and Technology, then created “One-Pagers” offering a brief explanation and a visual representation of each event.

At the conclusion of the project students participated in a “Gallery Walk” to review their classmates’ work, which were displayed around the classroom. The students were asked to take notes on the current events they knew about, those of which they were not aware, and any they wanted to learn more about.

The students also voted for their favorite one-pagers. First- and second-place winners are junior Sadie Stewart and senior Liam Quinn for Most Effort; seniors Kennedy Kolson and Kaitlyn Lawless for Most Informative; and seniors Zach Ruffner and Liam Quinn for Best Rhetorical Choices.
