Student Works Selected for Scholastic Art Awards

Several Mars Area High School students were selected to receive 2024 Pittsburgh Arts Region Scholastic Art Awards.

In the Drawing & Illustration category, senior Ryan Nesbitt received a Gold Key for his work, “Cherish,” and a Silver Key for “Entity.” Sophomore Sydney Denk received an honorable mention for her piece, “Esperanza.”

In the Painting category, senior Frank Vivian earned a Gold Key for “Where it Gets Quiet” and a Silver Key for “What it Takes.;” junior Maggie Lyker received a Gold Key for “Layin’” and an honorable mention for “Flavo Exspiravit;” junior Alyssa Hipsky was awarded a Gold Key for “Intensity” and an honorable mention for “Vibrantly Alive;” and, junior Ava Herbolich received a Silver Key for “In the Orange” and an honorable mention for “Ava.”

Honorable mentions were also awarded to senior Gian DePretis for “The Orange Machine;” senior Ryan Nesbitt for “I've Given Everything There Is To Give” and “Wither;” senior Abby Wittmann for “Mind is War” and “Paralyzed;” junior Maverick Hart for “Heather’s Sketchbook;” junior Sami Mazurek for “Spark;” junior Niina Takeuchi for “æ·±æ·μ (Shinen);” and sophomore Sydney Denk for “Lipstick on a Pig,” “The Botanical Gardens” and “Grace.”

In the Mixed Media category, honorable mention were awarded to senior Gian DePretis for “Seasons of Your Day;” senior Ryan Nesbitt for “Torrential Downpour; and, junior Maggie Lyker for “Flavos Gaela.”

In the Digital Art category, junior Alyssa Hipsky earned a Gold Key for “Love in Summer’s Bloom” and “Nevaeh;” junior Hannah Hodak was awarded a Silver Key for “Peering Orb;” and junior Vivien Miller received an honorable mention for “The Modern Ophelia.”

In the Printmaking category, junior Alyssa Hipsky was awarded a Gold Key for “Even After” and junior Vivien Miller received an honorable mention for “Innominate.” In the Photography category, senior Ryan Nesbitt received an honorable mention for “Ablaze” and “Alien Spotting.” In the Film & Animation category, senior Miles Stoops received an honorable mention for “Quantum Leap Frog”

The students’ works will be featured as part of the annual Pittsburgh Arts Region Scholastic Art Exhibit on display March 12-22, at the Carnegie Mellon University Hall of Fine Arts. An awards ceremony will be held at from noon to 5 p.m. on Saturday, March 23.
