Bowling Club Team Rolling Toward Success

Mars Area High School’s Bowling Club Team is looking forward to a successful season, as the Fightin’ Planets logged the team’s first-ever win in a match against the Shaler Area Titans on Dec. 5

While the team, which competes in the Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Bowling League (WPIBL) ended the 2024-2025 season with a record of 0-9, “every player got significantly better as the season went on and all individual averages increased,” according to Kelly Coffield, head coach.

“We have a full roster this year of 15 players and I am very excited about how the season is looking,” says Coffield. “(We) have two bowlers who average just under 190 and four bowlers who have bowled games with a score of over 200.”

Returning to this year’s team are juniors Gus Coffield, Luciano Cuzzocrea, Adam Genevro, Jonnie Maestra, Luke Reinhart and Chase Stamper; and sophomores Beni Ruiz and Ronan Schaultz. Other bowlers to watch include juniors Smyth Dunaway and Brett Kelly.

Bowling Club Team Returns to Competition

Mars Area High School’s Bowling Club Team has returned to the lanes for Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Bowling League (WPIBL) competition this season.

The school had previously had a Coed Varsity Bowling Club Team from 2008-2009 until the 2019-2020 School Year; however, with the onset of the COVID-19 Pandemic, the team was disbanded and did not reform. In 2023-2024, then seniors Aidan Alessio and Adam Rohrbaugh (Class of 2024) obtained approval to reform the team and set up a series of scrimmages for the team.

Though the team’s founders have graduated, as an officially sanctioned club team this season, the Fightin’ Planets are competing in WPIBL Section 9 North against teams from Central Catholic/Oakland Catholic, Deer Lakes, Riverview and Shaler Area high schools.

Returning to this year’s team is sophomore Gus Coffield. Rounding out the team are sophomores Luciano Cuzzocrea, Adam Genevro, Jonnie Maestra, Luke Reinhart and Chase Stamper; and freshmen Beni Ruiz and Ronan Schultz.
