Student Works Selected for Scholastic Art Awards

Several Mars Area High School students were selected to receive 2025 Pittsburgh Arts Region Scholastic Art Awards.

Senior Madalynn Balfour was selected for an American Vision award for her painting, “Mom,” which also received a Gold Key award. Balfour’s piece, “Anticipation,” also received a Gold Key. Senior Alyssa Hipsky received a Gold Key for her collage, “‘L’ Words;” a Gold Key for her painting, “Indulgence;” and, a Silver Key for her painting, “In Another Life.”

Senior Maggie Lyker was awarded a Gold Key for “Incandescent Glow” and received an honorable mention for “The Gentle Survive.” Senior Vivien Miller received a Silver Key for “MORBS;” a Silver Key for “’Frankenstein’ Book Cover;” an honorable mention for “Hello??”; and, an honorable mention for “Portrait of the Artist as a Young(er) Woman.”

Senior Sami Mazurek was awarded a Silver Key for “Beetle on a Log;” a Silver Key for “Fannie Flagg;” a Silver Key for “Jester Ready to Fester;” an honorable mention for “Carmilla;” an honorable mention for “Friends in Death;” an honorable mention for “Healing Water;” an honorable mention for “Mary Had a Little Lamb;” and, an honorable mention for “Silver Platter.”

Honorable mentions were also awarded to junior Sarah Buttyan for “So.” and “Alone; junior Chloe Karsman for “flying away;” senior Niina Takeuchi for “The Moons Light and Morning Star;” and, senior Maverick Hart for “All for you” and “Melting.”

The students’ works will be featured as part of the annual Pittsburgh Arts Region Scholastic Art Exhibit on display Feb. 26-March 9 at the Carnegie Mellon University College of Fine Arts. An awards ceremony will be held at from 11a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday, March 9.
