Team Ties for Third Place at Annual Science Bowl

Mars Area High School’s Science Bowl Team competed in the 2025 Western Pennsylvania High School Science Bowl, held Feb. 22 at Community College of Allegheny County — South Campus.

The team of juniors Naveen Jayaraman, Riana Palm and Andersen Palmer; sophomore Nolan Horvath; and freshman Mahin Ugle tied for third place out of eight teams in a Division Three. The students, who competed against teams from 31 local high schools, were asked questions related to biology, chemistry, earth & space, energy, mathematics and physics.

A second team of sophomores Alexis Abbey, Sophia Gourash, Ava Morovek, Amanda Morrison and Grace Nam competed in a virtual Science Bowl event in January. Because of a lottery draft, the team was not able to enter the in-person Science Bowl competition on Feb. 22.

“(The teams) have been working hard to expand their science knowledge,” says Christina Thomas, team coach. “We are looking forward to next year’s competition.”
