Mars Area High School senior Dylan Weitzell has received an appointment to the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy.
Appointment to the academy, one of only five U.S. service academies, requires a rigorous process of interviews; an academic record review; medical and fitness assessments; and a nomination from a member of congress. Weitzell was nominated by U.S. Sen. John Fetterman and U.S. Rep. Mike Kelly.
Upon graduating from the academy, Weitzell will hold a bachelor’s degree, a U.S. Coast Guard license, and an officer’s commission in the Armed Forces. Dylan plans to major in marine engineering with a goal of earning a commission into the U.S. Navy and pursuing a career in naval aviation.
