Mars Area High School Boys and Girls Varsity Cross Country Teams competed in the 2017 Slippery Rock University Cross Country Invitational, held Oct. 14 at Cooper’s Lake Campground. 

The boys team took 23rd place overall with 636 points and an average time of 18:37. Sophomore Zachary Leachman took ninth place with a time of 16:37; junior John Zervos, 67th place (17:59); senior Elijah Cook, 189th place (19:18); junior Brent Metal, 214th place (19:30); senior Caleb Keys, 240th place (19:42); senior Shaun Birch, 320th place (20:43); and sophomore Connor Bird, 343rd place (21:07).  

The girls team placed 34th overall with 836 points and an average time of 23:32. Top runners included freshman McKenna Bowes, who earned 51st place (21:07); junior Camille Bromley, 161st place (23:10); freshman Kelli Jancay, 206th place (23:44); senior McKenzie Hutchison, 219th place (23:55); senior Carli Walker, 326th place (25:48); and sophomore Julia Griffith, 397th place (27:56).
