Swimmers, Divers Compete at WPIAL Championships

Several members of Mars Area High School Boys & Girls Varsity Swimming & Diving Team competed in the 2017-2018 WPIAL Swimming & Diving Championships, held March 1-2 at the University of Pittsburgh Trees Pool.

The boys team placed 11th overall in Class 2A competition with a score of 108.5 and the girls team took 27th place with 11 points in Class 3A competition.

On the boys team, junior Andrew Pierre took first place (1:44.15); sophomore Zach Leachman, 22nd place (1:56.87); and freshman Aidan Wolf, 25th place (1:58.75) in the 200-Yard Freestyle. Junior Andrew Pierre earned first place (4:45.50); senior Austin Gilstrap, 20th place (5:17.29); and sophomore Zach Leachman, 25th place (5:24.11) in the 500-Yard Freestyle.

Senior Andrew Ivory took second place (1:59.23) and senior Austin Gilstrap tied for 21st place (2:12.88) in the 200-Yard Individual Medley (IM). Senior Andrew Ivory took third place (59.86) in the 100-Yard Breaststroke and freshman Aidan Wolf tied for 15th place (59.46) in the 100-Yard Backstroke.

The team of seniors Austin Gilstrap and Andrew Ivory, junior Andrew Pierre and sophomore Zach Leachman tied for ninth place (1:44.39) in the 200-Yard Medley Relay. The team of senior Andrew Ivory, junior Andrew Pierre, sophomore Zach Leachman and freshman Aidan Wolf received ninth place (3:22.90) in the 400-Yard Freestyle Relay.

On the girls team, freshman Megan Smith earned eighth place (2:10.87) in the 200-Yard IM and 18th place (1:00.33) in the 100-Yard Backstroke. Sophomore Maddie Mueller received 24th place with a score of 128.40 in One-Meter Diving.

Junior Jenna Halenda took 26th place (2:01.28) in the 200-Yard Freestyle. Sophomore Caroline Stamper took 30th place (1:11.17) in the 100-Yard Breaststroke and tied for 35th place (26.15) in the 50-Yard Freestyle.

The team of junior Jenna Halenda, sophomore Caroline Stamper, and freshmen Abigail Scott and Megan Smith took 17th place (1:54.32) in the 200-Yard Medley Relay. The team of senior Ellie Hall, junior Jenna Halenda, sophomore Caroline Stamper and freshman Megan Smith took 18th place (1:43.92) in the 200-Yard Freestyle Relay.
