Swimmers Compete in YMCA West District Event

Several Mars Area students competed in the 2018 YMCA Pennsylvania Western District Swimming Championships, held March 9-11 at SPIRE Institute Aquatic Center (Geneva, Ohio).

In 15&Over competition, junior Jenna Halenda earned third place in the 500-Yard Freestyle with a time of 5:30.78; eighth place (2:22.00) in the 200-Yard Backstroke; and ninth place (2:03.49) in the 200-Yard Freestyle. Freshman Abigail Scott took eighth place (1:13.46) in the 100-Yard Breaststroke and eighth place (2:40.06) in the 200-Yard Breaststroke.

The team of junior Jenna Halenda, sophomore Grace Huff, freshman Abigail Scott and one other took eighth place (2:01.32) in the 200-Yard Medley Relay.

In 13-14 competition, seventh-grader Natalie Stasioski took 12th place (1:08.83) in the 100-Yard Backstroke and 16th place (27.62) in the 50-Yard Freestyle. The team of eighth-grader Sophie Huff, seventh-grader McKenzie Van Iddekinge and two others received 12th place (2:16.92)in the 200-Yard Medley Relay.

Seventh-grader Leo Saver took 16th place (2:07.63) in the 200-Yard Freestyle and 18th place (57.88) in the 100-Yard Freestyle. The team of seventh-graders Andrew Palmer and Leo Saver and two others took 12th place (1:50.39) in the 200-Yard Freestyle Relay and competed in the 200-Yard Medley Relay.

In 11-12 competition, the team of sixth-grader Liam Quinn and three others took ninth place (2:04.63) in the 200-Yard Freestyle Relay.

In 10&Under competition, fifth-grader Sean Muchnok earned first place (39.65) in the 50-Yard Breaststroke; first place (1:29.21) in the 100-Yard Breaststroke; and 11th place (1:25.76) in the 100-Yard IM. The team of fifth-grader Sean Muchnok, fourth-grader Henry Saver and two others received 16th place (2:25.14) in the 200-Yard Freestyle Relay.

Individual swimmers and relay teams that placed in the top six will advance to the 2018 Pennsylvania State YMCA Championships, to be held March 23-25 at Pennsylvania State University’s McCoy Natatorium (University Park, Pa.)
