Mars Area seniors Lauren Wasylson and Robby Carmody were named 2017-2018 Pittsburgh Post-Gazette High School Basketball Class 5A Players of the Year.
Wasylson, a four-year member of Mars Area High School Girls Varsity Basketball Team, helped to lead the Lady Planets to win the 2017-2018 PIAA Class 5A Girls Varsity Basketball Championship Title; to fourth place in the WPIAL Class 5A Championships; and a share of the Section 4-5A title.
This season, Wasylson averaged 16.9 points and seven rebounds per game and she has earned 1,332 career points. She intends to join the Musketeers Women’s Basketball Team at Xavier University (Cincinnati, Ohio), where she plans to major in business.
Carmody, a four-year member of Mars Area High School Boys Varsity Basketball Team, helped to lead the Fightin’ Planets to earn the 2017-2018 Section 2-5A title as well as the WPIAL Class 5A Boys Varsity Basketball Championship Title, a first for the school. The team also took second place in the 2017-2018 PIAA Class 5A Boys Varsity Basketball Championship.
This season, Carmody earned an average of 31.1 points, 14.1 rebounds, 4.3 steals, and 1.6 blocks for Mars (25-5). He is the seventh-leading scorer in WPIAL history with 2,390 points and has amassed a career 1,126 rebounds, 592 successful free throws, 423 assists, 345 steals, 186 three-pointers, 103 blocks, and 91 wins.
Carmody intends to continue his sports career with the Fighting Irish Men’s Basketball Team at the University of Notre Dame (Notre Dame, Ind.), where he plans to major in business and finance.
