Basketball Players, Coach Recognized by Sports Writers

Pennsylvania Sports Writers (PSW) has selected three Mars Area High School’s basketball players and one coach for all-state honors.

Dana Petruska, Mars Area High School Girls Varsity Basketball head coach, was selected as the PSW All-State Class 5A Girl Basketball Coach of the Year.

This season, Petruska led the Lady Planets to a PIAA Class 5A Girls Varsity Basketball Championship win, earning the team’s first state title in school history. The team took fourth place in this 2017-2018 WPIAL Class 5A Girls Varsity Basketball Championship and tied for the Section 4-5A title. She has earned more 400 career wins.

Senior Lauren Wasylson and junior Tai Johnson, both members of Mars Area High School Girls Varsity Basketball Team, were named to the PSW All-State Class 5A Girls Basketball First Team.

Johnson earned an average 18.4 points per game this season. She has verbally committed to join the Bison Women’s Basketball Team at Bucknell University (Lewisburg, Pa.)

Wasylson averaged 17.5 points per game this season and has earned a career 1,332 points. She intends to join the Musketeers Women’s Basketball Team at Xavier University (Cincinnati, Ohio), where she plans to major in business.

Senior Robby Carmody was selected for the PSW All-State Class 5A Boys Basketball First Team and was named PSW All-State Class 5A Player of the Year.

Carmody, a member of Mars Area High School Boys Varsity Basketball Team, helped to lead the Fightin’ Planets to earn the 2017-2018 WPIAL Class 5A Boys Varsity Basketball Championship Title, a first for the school, as well as the Section 2-5A title. The team also took second place in the 2017-2018 PIAA Class 5A Boys Varsity Basketball Championship.

This season, Carmody earned an averaged of 31.1 points per game and is the seventh-leading scorer in WPIAL history with 2,390 points. He intends to continue his sports career with the Fighting Irish Men’s Basketball Team at the University of Notre Dame (Notre Dame, Ind.), where he plans to major in business and finance.
