Mars Area School District was awarded 2017-2018 Trib HSSN (High School Sports Network) Class 5A Sports Cup.
The Trib HSSN Cup, a yearlong competition to determine the top WPIAL sports program in each classification, awards points for section/conference wins, district/state playoff wins and district/state championships and runners-up. Schools can earn one point for section/conference wins as well as for placing in WPIAL and/or PIAA competitions.
Mars Area’s sports teams earned a total of 549 points throughout the school. Of note, the Girls Varsity Basketball Team won the PIAA title and took fourth place in the WPIAL playoffs; the Boys Varsity Basketball Team earned its first-ever WPIAL title and took second place in the PIAA playoffs; and the Boys Varsity Baseball Team took second place WPIAL competition and advanced to the PIAA quarterfinals.
In addition, the Boys Varsity Lacrosse Team won its third consecutive WPIAL title and advanced to the PIAA semifinals; the Girls Varsity Soccer Team took second place in the WPIAL playoffs and advanced to the PIAA quarterfinals; and the Girls Varsity Lacrosse Team took fourth place in the WPIAL championships.
Mars Area High schools varsity football, softball, boys volleyball and girls volleyball teams each advanced to compete in their respective WPIAL championships. And, members of the school’s girls varsity golf, coed swimming & diving, and wrestling team competed in individual WPIAL and PIAA contests.
