Garrett ReinkeMars Area senior Garrett Reinke, a running back on the Mars Area High School Boys Varsity Football Team, was selected as a recipient of the 2018 Butler Eagle Scoring Trophy.

This season, Reinke ran for a total of 1,807 yards and scored 22 touchdowns. He ran for more than 200 yards in four separate contests and scored four touchdowns in each of the Fightin’ Planets’ games against the Fox Chapel Foxes and the Kiski Area Cavaliers.

He helped to lead the Fightin’ Planets to the first round of the 2018 WPIAL Class 5A Boys Football Championship. The team ended the regular season with an overall record of 9-1 and 6-1 in Section 3-5A of the Northern Conference.

Reinke is the fifth Mars Area High School football player to receive the trophy, which was awarded to Isaiah Johnson (Class of 2018) in both 2015 and 2016; Josh Schultheis (Class of 2015) in 2013; Bill Bair (Class of 2008) in both 2006 and 2007; and Paul Ferrese (Class of 2006) in 2005.

Butler Eagle’s Sweet 16 Honors

Also of note, several members of the Fightin’ Planets boys varsity football team were selected for the Butler Eagle’s Sweet 16 honor.

Senior Garrett Reinke (running back), senior Hunter Boyd (offensive lineman) and junior Michael Carmody (offensive lineman) were named to the Sweet 16 Offense. Senior Thomas Sheehy (wide receiver), junior Mitchell Wright (tight end) and junior Dalton Becker (offensive lineman) received honorable mentions.

Senior Chase Lambert (defensive lineman) and junior Drew Schlegel (defensive back) were named to the Sweet 16 Defense. Sophomore Ben Chizmar (linebacker), sophomore Theodore Ruffner (linebacker) and senior Tyler Kowalkowski (defensive back) received honorable mentions.

Players Named to All-Conference Teams

Several members of Mars Area High School Varsity Football Team were named to 2018 Class 5A Northern All-Conference Teams.

Seniors Hunter Boyd (guard) and Garrett Reinke (running back) as well as junior Michael Carmody (tackle) were named to the First Team Offense; and, senior Chase Lambert (defensive tackle) to the First Team Defense.

Senior Andrew Recchia (wide receiver) and junior Mitchell Wright (tight end) were named to the Second Team Offense; and, juniors Tyler Kowalkowski (defensive back) and Drew Schlegel (punter) to the Second Team Defense.

Junior Dalton Becker (tackle), junior Blake Edwards (kicker) and sophomore Theodore Ruffner (running back) received an Honorable Mention for Offense; and, sophomore Ben Chizmar (inside linebacker), senior Darin Lyle (defensive end) and senior Thomas Sheehy (defensive back), an Honorable Mention for Defense.

WPIAL Championships

Mars Area High School Boys Varsity Football Team advanced to the first round of the 2018 WPIAL Class 5A Boys Football Championship on Nov. 2, but were defeated 14-0 by the Woodland Hills Wolverines.

The Fightin’ Planets ended the 2018 regular season with an overall record of 9-1 and 6-1 in Section 3-5A of the Northern Conference. This season, senior Garrett Reinke led the team in scoring with 21 touchdowns and senior Tyler Kowalkowski led the team in passing with 1,168 yards.

Senior Garrett Reinke led in rushing (1,807 yards), followed by sophomore Theodore Ruffner (467 yards) and junior Drew Schlegel (359 yards). Senior Thomas Sheehy led the team in receiving (295 yards), followed by senior Andrew Recchia (256 yards); junior Drew Schlegel (237 yards); and senior Garrett Reinke (172 yards).

Rounding out this year’s team were seniors Miles BaronHunter Boyd, Kevin Ceh, Nicholas Ferro, Charles Green, Chase Lambert, Darin Lyle, Jonathan Quinn, Jonathan Rindt, Lucas Thomas and Michael Vickinovac; juniors Ryan Barber, Logan Bayne, Dalton Becker, Michael Carmody, Giovanni Cuzzocrea, Declan DeLong, Joseph Deluca, Blake Edwards, Joshua Grell, Sam Santoro, Russell Snow and Mitchell Wright; sophomores Lance Bartley, Ben Chizmar, Christian Kay, Jordan Moser, Chase Nesselroad, Theodore Ruffner and Colin Vandenberghe; and, freshmen Jacob Caringola, Greg Chernosky, Remy Crofutt, Christopher Dvorak, Quinn Fuller, Hunter Hart, Timothy Humes, Joseph Tepke, Evan Thompson and Jacob Ottenweller
