Seniors to Continue Sports Careers in College

Nine Mars Area High School seniors signed letters of intent to continue their sports careers at the college level:

William BednarWilliam Bednar signed a letter of intent to join the Bulldogs Men’s Baseball Team at Mississippi State University (Mississippi State, Miss.), where he has yet to declare a major.

Bednar is a four-year member of Mars Area High School Boys Varsity Baseball Team, which advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2018 PIAA Boys Varsity Baseball Class 5A Championship and took second place in the 2018 WPIAL Boys Varsity Baseball Class 5A Championship. Bednar was named 2018 Pittsburgh Post-Gazette High School Baseball Class 5A Player of the Year.

At Mars Area High School, Bednar is a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and National Honor Society. He was also a member of the Boys Varsity Football Team during his freshman and sophomore years.


Michael DoyleMichael Doyle 
signed a letter of intent to join the Greyhounds Men’s Lacrosse Team at the University of Indianapolis (Indianapolis, Ind.), where he plans to major in business/finance.

Doyle is a four-year member of Mars Area High School Boys Varsity Lacrosse Team, which advanced to the semifinals of the 2018 PIAA Class 2A Boys Lacrosse Championships and won the 2018 WPIAL Class 2A Boys Varsity Lacrosse Championship (earning its third consecutive title).

At Mars Area High School, he is also a member of FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America).


Amelia HaleyAmelia Haley
signed a letter of intent to join the Bonnies Women’s Tennis Team at St. Bonaventure University (Bonaventure, N.Y.), where she plans to major in biochemistry.

Haley is a four-year member of Mars Area High School Girls Varsity Tennis Team, which advanced to quarterfinals of the 2018 WPIAL Class 3A Girls Varsity Tennis Team Championships; and tied for first place at the 2018 MAC (Midwestern Athletic Conference) Girls Varsity Tennis Tournament.

This season in doubles competition, Haley and sophomore Emily Ivory advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2018 PIAA Class 3A Girls Varsity Tennis Doubles Tournament; took second place at the 2018 WPIAL Class 3A Doubles Tournament; and first place at the 2018 Section 2-3A Doubles Tournament. Haley also took fourth place at the 2018 WPIAL Class 3A Singles Championship and second place at the 2018 Section 2-3A Singles Tournament.

At Mars Area High School, Haley is president of French Club; a member of French National Honor Society and Japanese Club; and, as a freshman, she was a member of the school’s Girls Varsity Track & Field Team. She also plays tennis at Alpha Tennis & Fitness Club of Pittsburgh.


Gavin HoneycuttGavin Honeycutt 
signed a letter of intent to join the Pioneers Men’s Lacrosse Team at the Marietta College (Marietta, Ohio), where he plans to major in marketing/management.

Honeycutt is a four-year member of Mars Area High School Boys Varsity Lacrosse Team, which advanced to the semifinals of the 2018 PIAA Class 2A Boys Lacrosse Championships and won the 2018 WPIAL Class 2A Boys Varsity Lacrosse Championship (earning its third consecutive title).

Honeycutt is also a member of the Pittsburgh Low & Away Travel Lacrosse Team.


Tai JohnsonTai Johnson 
signed a letter of intent to join the Bison Women’s Basketball Team at Bucknell University (Lewisburg, Pa.), where she has yet to declare a major.

Johnson is a four-year member of Mars Area High School Girls Varsity Basketball Team, which won the 2017-2018 PIAA Class 5A Girls Varsity Basketball Championship; took fourth place in the 2017-2018 WPIAL Class 5A Championship; and tied for the Section 4-5A title. Johnson was named to the 2017- 2018 PSW All-State Class 5A Girls Basketball First Team.

At Mars Area High School, Johnson is a member of Key Club, National Honor Society and REACH (Responsible Educated Adolescents Can Help).


Andrew RecchiaAndrew Recchia 
signed a letter of intent to join the Raiders Men’s Basketball Team at Shippensburg University (Shippensburg, Pa.), where he plans to major in business or marketing.

Recchia is a four-year member of the Mars Area High School Boys Varsity Basketball Team, which took second place in the 2017-2018 PIAA Class 5A Boys Varsity Basketball Championship. The team also brought home the 2017-2018 WPIAL Class 5A Championship Title as well as the Section 2-5A title.

This fall, Recchia also served as a wide receiver on Mars Area High School Varsity Football Team and was named to the 2018 Class 5A Northern All-Conference Second Team Offense.


Rachel SchererRachel Scherer 
signed a letter of intent to join the Saints Women’s Golf Team at Holy Cross College (Notre Dame, Ind.), where she plans to major in psychology.

Scherer is a four-year member of the Mars Area High School Girls Varsity Golf Team, which advanced to the semifinals of the 2018 WPIAL Class 3A Girls Team Championship. She is a member of the Girls Varsity Track & Field Team as well as National Honor Society and French National Honor Society. 

She is also a figure skater with North Park Ice Skating Team.


Nathan SmithNathan Smith
signed a letter of intent to join the Greyhounds Men’s Lacrosse Team at the University of Indianapolis (Indianapolis, Ind.), where he plans to major in criminal justice.

Smith is a four-year member of Mars Area High School Boys Varsity Lacrosse Team, which advanced to the semifinals of the 2018 PIAA Class 2A Boys Lacrosse Championships and won the 2018 WPIAL Class 2A Boys Varsity Lacrosse Championship (earning its third consecutive title).

He was also member of Mars Area High School Boys Varsity Football Team during his freshman, sophomore and junior years.


Erica WojcikiewiczErica Wojcikiewicz 
signed a letter to join the Flyers Women’s Tennis Team at the University of Dayton (Dayton, Ohio), where she plans to major in mechanical engineering.

Wojcikiewicz plays tennis for Pennsylvania Tennis Academy (Wexford, Pa.) and is ranked 10th in Pennsylvania by the United States Tennis Association.

At Mars Area High School, Wojcikiewicz was a member of the Girls Varsity Tennis Team during her sophomore year; and she is a current member of

National Honor Society and French National Honor Society.
