Class Rank Determination

According to Mars Area School District Policy 214 Class Rank, class rank at Mars Area High School is determined by a student's grade point average for all students in Grades 9-12. Class rank is computed by the final grade in all subjects.

Any two or more students whose computed grade point averages are identical shall be given the same rank. The rank of the student who immediately follows a tied position will be determined by the number of students preceding him/her and not by the rank of the person preceding him/her.

A student's grade point average and rank in class shall be entered on his/her record and shall be subject to the Board's policy on release of student records. Rank in class shall be entered on students' records and on all transcripts where they will be available for review by authorized persons.

The District's superintendent shall develop procedures for the computation of grade point averages and the assignment of rank in class to implement this policy.

Valedictorian, Salutatorian & Honors Selection Process

Commencement speakers at Mars Area High School are determined by class rank at the end of the third nine weeks grading period. The student, who is ranked number one at the end of the third nine weeks, is invited to speak at graduation. The class president, who is elected by the student body of the senior class, may also speak at graduation.
Valedictorian & Salutatorian

Mars Area High School's valedictorian and salutatorian are determined at the end of each school year, after all grades have been tabulated. (Note: The valedictorian and salutatorian may not be the same students who are ranked number one and number two at the end of the third nine weeks. Therefore, they may not be those students who are invited to speak at graduation.) Once, the valedictorian and salutatorian have been determined, Mars Area High School notifies the students and makes an announcement through District publications and local media outlets. In addition, both the valedictorian and salutatorian will receive a framed certificate denoting their achievement and their names will appear on a plaque listing all valedictorians and salutatorians at Mars Area High School.
Honor Students

High Honor Students, Honor Students and National Honor Society members are recognized at commencement. Students who have a 3.0-3.49 grade point average (GPA) at the end of the third nine weeks grading period wear a lapel pin during the graduation ceremony. Students who have a 3.5 or higher GPA at the end of the third nine weeks grading period wear a stole and are listed in the graduation program as High Honor Students. Students who are members of National Honor Society wear cords at graduation and are recognized in the program.
